The JERRI Project

Aim

Joining Efforts for RRI – JERRI – made a substantial contribution to deeply institutionalizing practices and attitudes of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) in the European Research Area. For this purpose JERRI orchestrated a deep RRI transition process within the two largest European Research and Technology Organizations (RTOs), the German Fraunhofer Gesellschaft and the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research. The process was conceptualized as an intense mutual learning process between the two organizations, a wider circle of RTOs, and stakeholders across Europe. Thus, JERRI exploited the unique mediating function of RTOs to catalyze RRI transition processes in industry, society and policy across the European research and innovation landscape.

Understanding of RRI

Process in detail

  • development of specific RRI goals within Fraunhofer and TNO, based on existing good practices, and in close interaction with stakeholders, for the following five key dimensions: Ethics, Societal Engagement, Gender Equality and Gender in Research and Innovation Content, Science Education, Open Access
  • set up of action plans for each key dimension followed by the realization of RRI practices in pilot cases
  • organisational change process accompanied by deep institutionalisation theoretical framework and impact monitoring
  • distribution of good practices among internal and external stakeholders and further RTOs
  • international mutual learning on good RRI practices at both the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Arizona State University (ASU)

The project ran from June 2016 until May 2019 under the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 / Science with and for Society programme.
